Conditions for Selecting and Using the ASi-5 Successor Model
Note
If a defective device needs to be replaced , it is recommended to use a replacement device that has the same item number instead of the successor model.
Note on ASi-5 Modules
An ASi-5 master is required for the operation of an ASi-5 module.
Standalone gateways and gateways with integrated safety monitor of Bihl+Wiedemann must be equipped with combined ASi-5/ASi-3 masters to enable the joint operation of ASi-5 modules and ASi-3 modules on the same ASi circuit.

Switching to ASi-5 Modules when redesigning, revising or modifying a system
When designing a new system or revising an existing machine, it is recommended to use the latest and most powerful devices. The ASi-5 successor models offer all the well-known advantages of the previous Bihl+Wiedemann ASi modules, plus a variety of new functions and the best value for money.
Please note that to use the new ASi-5 Modules you also need to switch over to the new Bihl+Wiedemann ASi-5/ASi-3 masters. These enable simultaneous operation of modules and nodes of all ASi specifications on the same ASi circuit.
Comparison of functions and technical features
When designing a new system or modernising an existing machine, it is important to select the right device with the required technical features.
Especially, when exchanging an ASi module or ASi Safety module with a successor model in an existing machine, care must be taken to ensure that particular technical characteristics are as similar as possible or even better (depending on the desired upgrade of the machine) than the one you have:
- Number of (safe) inputs or outputs
- Number of allocated ASi addresses/ASi nodes per ASi circuit
- Supply voltage from ASi or from AUX
- Max. supply current/derating
- Number and position of connections for ASi, AUX and peripheral devices
- Pin assignment for modules with M12/M8 connections
- Dimensions
- Required version of Bihl+Wiedemann software suites for configuration, diagnostics and commissioning
The successor models recommended by Bihl+Wiedemann are always as similar as possible to the respective archive articles with regard to the above criteria and at the same time they offer as many new functions and improved technology as possible.
Number/Type of Counter Inputs
In contrast to the archived item, the successor model has 4 x counter inputs (pulse counter), which can optionally be configured for 1-channel or 2-channel operation via the Bihl+Wiedemann software suites (BW2916, BW2902).
For the corresponding technical details please refer to the datasheet and the attached documentation. If you have any questions on how to configure ASi-5 counter modules, please feel free to contact our support team at any time.
Number and Position of Connections/Dimensions
The number and position of the connections for peripheral devices (sensors, actuators) as well as for ASi and AUX (auxiliary power) vary to a certain extent between archived items and successor models depending on the design and performance characteristics of the particular device. In some cases, the dimensions between the devices may also differ.
Please make sure that there is sufficient space available for installation in the electrical cabinet and that the connecting cables are of sufficient length.
For the corresponding technical details, please refer to the datasheet and the attached documentation. An Eplan macro is also available for each unit as a download on the respective product detail page.
Pin Assignment of the M12/M8 Connections
The pin assignment of the M12/M8 connections for peripheral devices (sensors, actuators) can vary to a certain extent between archived items and successor models depending on their design and performance characteristics.
If pre-assembled cables are to be used for the connection between module and peripheral device, first check whether the pin assignment at both cable ends matches the pin assignment of the module.
For the corresponding technical details, please refer to the datasheet and the attached documentation. An Eplan macro is also available for each unit as a download on the respective product detail page.
ASi node profile and required ASi specification of the master
The ASi node profile can vary to a certain extent between archived items and successor models depending on performance features and function. ASi modules with different node profiles are not exchange-compatible as successor models. The manual with the exchange instructions can be found in the enclosed documentation.
Bihl+Wiedemann ASi-5/ASi-3 masters have universal use and are compatible with modules and nodes of all ASi generations. If you have any questions on the required profile of your ASi master, please feel free to contact our support team at any time.
Bit Assignment (ASi-5)
When switching from ASi-3 modules to ASi-5 modules, the bit assignment of the I/O data or process data can differ considerably between archived items and successor models. Up to 16-bit I/O data and profiles with up to 32 bytes of process data are available. For the corresponding technical details please refer to the datasheet and the attached documentation.
The data image of the ASi-5 modules can be transferred via UDT to the higher level control. A UDT file is also provided for each device as a download via the respective product detail page. If you have any questions on how to integrate the data image of ASi-5 modules, please feel free to contact our support team at any time.
ASIMON360 and ASi Control Tools360 With Hardware Catalog
In order to make optimal use of the ASi-5 modules from Bihl+Wiedemann, it is recommended to use the most up to date version of the ASIMON360 or ASi Control Tools 360 software.
Not all successor models may be included in the hardware catalog of older Bihl+Wiedemann Software Suites (BW2916, BW2902).
It is recommended to check the Bihl+Wiedemann Software Suite regularly for updates via Help > About > Check for Updates.
